Dubai Ocean Project: One of the World’s Largest Marine Reefs to Be Built

One of the World’s Largest Marine Reef Projects Takes Shape in Dubai

Dubai’s next big venture, the Dubai Reef Project, is set to make waves as one of the largest marine reef developments in the world, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.

The Dubai Reef Project, first introduced in May 2023, will see 20,000 purpose-built reef modules deployed across the waters surrounding the city over the next three years. These modules are designed to provide refuge and shelter for marine species, particularly juveniles, enhancing the region’s biodiversity. The initial phase will kick off as early as November 2024, with the first 1,000 reef modules entering Dubai’s waters.

Once complete, the project will cover a vast 600 square kilometers, solidifying Dubai’s place as a leader in marine conservation. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum took to LinkedIn to emphasize the scale and impact of the initiative, stating: “This project embodies Dubai’s commitment to preserving our environment, promoting biodiversity, and playing a crucial role in global efforts to combat climate change.”

In collaboration with HaejooX, a renowned Korean reef developer, the Dubai Reef Project will contribute significantly to the city’s ongoing sustainability initiatives. The agreement was finalized under Dubai’s sustainability program, reflecting the emirate's strategic goals for environmental preservation and climate action.

A Step Toward Climate Neutrality Dubai’s dedication to climate neutrality by 2050 is central to this project, which aims to not only preserve marine life but also mitigate the impacts of climate change. Sheikh Hamdan highlighted: “We are committed to generating impactful solutions and innovative projects that overcome emerging challenges from climate change. This is another step toward securing a more sustainable future for the next generation.”
